Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
