Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
